Going with this blog’s theme of nostalgia, I look inward to try to figure out why I have such a tendency to be nostalgic.

Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground

Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground’s 2008 self-titled album is one of the best of the decade, combining late-era Beatles experimentation with the odd textures of the modern indie scene to create a genre hopping album that breathes new life into a tired and boring music scene. Always fearless in trying new things, this band never settles for ordinary, adding new spins on classic themes andsounds, while creating new genres of their own. If you have ever said that modern music “just isn’t as good,” as the classic tunes of your childhood, take a chance and give this a spin. You won’t regret it.

We had to record 30 – 60 seconds of audio from a film or t.v show and falsify it and set it to music.

Movie of the Week – The Straight Story

When most people see “Directed By David Lynch,” on the cover of this film, they almost always make the judgement to see it or not see it in the following few seconds. He is known for making very independent, strange and often times frustratingly vague films that appeal to a very small group of viewers. However, this is not a typical David Lynch film. It tells the story of a old man that lives on a farm in Iowa that finds out his brother has had a stroke and decides to go visit him and make amends before he dies. Since he can’t get a driver’s license because of physical impairments, he has to ride his lawnmower 240 miles from Iowa to Wisconsin. Along the way he reflects on his life and meets people and makes an impact on their lives too. In my opinion it is a very underrated film that could be compared to the classic epic tales about dealing with immortality and relationships with other people. Highlights of the film include the incredible lead performance by Richard Farnsworth and the film’s understated score. Great, uplifting movie and also based on a true story as well.

Album of the week: Hospice – The Antlers

The Antlers 2009 concept album Hospice is a record that defies the time it was produced in. While most bands spend hours in the studio polishing and auto-tuning their work until it sounds like a robot is playing the instruments, leader and chief musical architect Peter Silberman chose a different route.Silberman, locked himself in a New York apartment for several months writing and recording this album, giving it a very unique sound. It follows the story of a hospital worker who falls in love with a terminally ill cancer patient what he goes through before and after her death. Not an uplifting listen, but a rewarding one. The album’s sparse instrumentation and ghostly aura provide the perfect backdrop for the mood of the story. Most of, if not all of these songs probably won’t be played on the radio, but with song titles like Prologue and Epilogue, it was meant to be listened to from start to finish while following the story. No one knows to what extent it is autobiographical, but it certainly seems likehe was feeling everything he wrote.
